Research paper "The movement of Digital Storytelling"

Storytelling has been used as a strategy in classroom for a long time. People pass their experiences, beliefs, values, and legend from time to time through story oral telling. Also the important knowledge about all cultures has been passed by using stories throughout history. By using storytelling, it can attract student’s attention and participation. The way it tells base on personal experiences which lead to the easily imagination of the audience. When I was a student teaching, I always started my teaching by a question that lead to my topic contents and started with the questions that let my kinder tell their stories. Strategies use

Two Strategies in my PBL

Digital Storytelling activity
There are three member in a group. Each group will create a 15-20 pages story from Storybird which is a collaborative storytelling website that provides a bunch of beautiful pictures and templates. Students need to tell a story, script, or poem that will match with the picture. The student will be assigned to do a group discussion and a research to decide what is the theme of their story. For example, teacher will assign the topic "The season". Student have to find the information about five seasons of the year including the term. They have to study all the information to understand about the seasons so that they can make and tell the good story.

OPV: Other people's opinion activity
Student will create a space for other people’s point of view on voicethread. Students have to post the picture of each characters from their story to voicethread. Then, they will the invitation to the classmates and friends to comments. Classmates can leave comments by voice, text, and video.

Assessment and Rubric

Assessment is one of the most important part of doing project. Teacher need to evaluate student and the progress of project. The purpose of assessment is to develop and implement the leaner and project. Rubric is the tool to make the assessment convenient and clarified. rubicstar.4teachers.org is the alternative of creating online rubric. You can choose any kind of templates and the object of assessment. It is fun and easy way of assessment which I like it a lot because I don't have to mess up with Excel anymore.
I created two rubrics for my PBL project. I divided the assessment in two parts of content, first part is reading and storytelling, second part is website design.

We use R.A.F.T strategy with Creately to brainstorm and organize the idea of writing.
The other tool that fits in R.A.F.T is Xtra normal; VDO maker tools. Creating the VDO is another styles of narrative which is fun and interesting.

I found this project idea from RFB&D® Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic®: Building Bridges Between Print Disabilities and Educational Success
RFB&D®, a national nonprofit, volunteer organization, is the leading accessible audiobook library for students with disabilities such as visual impairment or dyslexia. With titles available in every subject area and grade level, RFB&D's digitally recorded audio textbooks help students challenged by the printed page.

I read, U learn project reading and recording for the Blind & Dyslexic® who learning through listening via leaning center website. This project, Students 10th grade in social study class will search for the book that they are interested in and suited for the blind & dyslexic. Then, they create audiobook by record their reading via web2.0 audio tools and upload to website that teacher and students create for this volunteer project. This website will be e-learning center that not only provide the project team or any volunteer to record and upload audio files, but also people who wants to learn through listening can download the audiobook.

PBL lesson topic ideas


What is PBL? and how to teach PBL in classroom? It's still complicated for some people, same as me. Until lately, I found the interesting PBL introduction that made me got the idea better from utopia.org and I think it will clarify you.

"One important role the teacher plays in a PBL lesson is in helping students see the parallels between the project and similar real-world projects" (Moursund, D. 2003).
Teacher should pick the topic that student interesting. It has to build the new knowledge from the prior knowledge construct. You may interested in this VDO which is the classroom demonstration of hands-on activities that approach to PBL An Introduction to Project Learning | Edutopia

Inquiry-Based Learning The process of inquiring begins with gathering information and data through applying the human senses -- seeing, hearing, touching, tasting, and smelling. A complex process is involved when individuals attempt to convert information and data into useful knowledge. Useful application of inquiry learning involves several factors: a context for questions, a framework for questions, a focus for questions, and different levels of questions. Well-designed inquiry learning produces knowledge formation that can be widely applied.

www.globalschoolnet.org is a good website for teacher to search for the project and activity. It has a bunch of project registry. You can search or select projects associated with the criteria or features. I found interesting some PBL projects from this website that maybe gives you the idea for your own project.
This project is suited for age 5-9. Students watch how the seasons change around the world. Participants will take a photo once a month and upload it to an online photo album. Descriptions of field trips, favorite months and artwork are also displayed.
I think this project encourage student to learn about the nature. Also, they will develop skills in observation. This is a very interesting topic to learn because the season changes every 3 to 4 months, so it will urge them to find the cause and effect. Moreover, this project requires student to upload online photo album which they can exchange the data and opinion to other students. Absolutely, this project will be world wide.

Crossing Borders is an opportunity for children around the world to learn about world geography, world cultures, and to make new friends.The "People Connection" is an important bridge to world peace and understanding between people of all nations. In this project, children in classes around the world would be invited to participate with other classes in an exchange of information.
In my opinion crossing borders provide the opportunity for students to learn more about the countries in the world and to learn the different culture and social. I think teacher should make a conditional that students have to choose the country that they interested and never known the information about it. This is gonna be fun.

Web 2.0 Tool Vedio Screening

Kideos is a safety video online channel for kids. All videos have monitored by The Video Advisory Council before broadcasting. Parent will have more confident that their children will get through the reliable medias while have fun on Kideos. Kideos has 22 categories of videos whereas each section will contain many short video clips as an alternative. Kideos can be used with Jig SawII strategies. Teachers and parents can work in a small group to share and provide more videos that are appropriate to their children. Then, they can divide the task by working on the assigned catagories, for instance, songs, kid movies, etc. Also, Teachers and parents might set up the due date in order to monitor the group work. They can share videos that are intersing. Then, group should spend time together to screen all videos before post on the website. This strategy will enhance to useful of this website and also expand all children acknowledgement who access this media channel.

Project-Based Learning Introduction

I'm familiar with project-based learning but in early childhood education field not in IT filed. This kind of learning technic is one of the most effective technic to teach the kindergarten. From my school experiences I think it works very well with kids who have short concentration. After I glanced this chapter I wonder how this PBL different from what I had ever learnt, so this kinda interesting to me to embrace my prior knowledge with the new one, especially in IT field that is focused on this book.

This is the important ideas of PBL
  1. Learner centered.
  • Students have a voice to choose the content area and projects they want to do.
  • Focusing on ensuring that student understand the purpose of what they are doing and what it is. Also they need to know how will they be assessed and help to set the assessessment goals.
  • PBL contribute to learner motivation and active engagement.
2. Problem or task oriented.
  • Most lessons should contain an emphasis on both lower-order and higher-order knowledge and skills but every PBL lesson should include an emphasis on higher-order knowledge and skill.
3. Authentic assessment is an important component of PBL.
  • Students understand goals, evaluation and assessment in a project clearly.

My PBL experienced in high school


  • When I was in secondary, most of my classes are teacher-center which used to be effective but it's boring. Only in sociology class that teacher applied PBL with our class. She assigned us a group project which we had to do everything by ourselves from the beginning to the end. Teacher did not help us anything but give us clues and directions. We did lots of research before decided to pick the topic, then find the data, created presentation, and presented to class. That was my first time to learn how to do research from internet and learn how to work with power point. First, I don't like this kind of activity but after a while, I felt that I gain lots of knowledge, skills, and experiences by searching and doing by myself. How PBL was work with my class is getting whole class' attention and everybody gained the knowledge much more than just sit and listen.
